Skid steers are found on more job sites in Los Angeles than almost any other piece of equipment. They grade, they move material, they clear debris, and they run dozens of different attachments. But renting the wrong configuration wastes money. Here's what to know before you call.

Wheeled vs Track: Which Is Right for You?

Wheeled skid steers move faster on hard and paved surfaces. They're more maneuverable in tight areas and are the standard choice for warehouse, yard, and paved-surface work. The downside: they can damage soft lawns and finished grades.

Compact track loaders (CTLs) run on rubber tracks. Lower ground pressure means less surface damage on grass, sand, and soft or wet terrain. They also provide better traction on slopes and loose material. The trade-off: slower on hard surfaces and typically higher rental cost.

If your job is on concrete, asphalt, or packed gravel — go wheeled. If it's on a lawn, in a muddy yard, or on soft fill — go tracked.

Capacity and Size

Skid steers range from under 1,000 lb rated operating capacity (mini loaders like the Bobcat MT100) up to 3,400 lb for larger CTLs like the CAT 299D3. Match your capacity to your heaviest material load — buckets of wet concrete, landscaping rock, or demolition debris are heavier than they look.

Attachments

This is where skid steers earn their versatility. A well-equipped rental yard can set you up with:

  • General purpose and cleanup buckets
  • Augers for post holes and pier drilling
  • Grapples for demo cleanup and brush clearing
  • Trencher attachments for utility line installation
  • Pallet forks for material handling

HD Equipment Rental carries major Bobcat, CAT, John Deere, and Kubota attachments. Confirm availability when you book.
